SPORTS THERAPY & REHABILITATION – IPTAS

SPORTS THERAPY & REHABILITATION (PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA)

COURSE OVERVIEW

Sports Therapy & Rehabilitation follows a similar approach to Manual Therapy however this programme trains students to deliver tailored therapies designed for use in a dedicated sporting context. As a hands-on, holistic, non-invasive and drug free prevention and treatment, which is highly effective, our approach is recognised by both the amateur and professional sports person. Institute graduates have worked with a wide cross-section of teams, Olympians and professional sports people.

The course is divided into two stages, each one taking place over an 18 month period. Classes take place one weekend per month over the 18 months per stage. Students will become practice ready through our clinical internship programme. Find out more about course content and the clinical internship below.

HOW THE COURSE WORKS

At the Institute we use a wide variety of teaching and learning approaches that promote active learning, preparing you for your journey as a life-long learner through your professional career. Our courses are offered through an ‘extended pathway’. This means you can study while you earn. An extended pathway makes the course accessible to mature students and to those who are engaged in full-time employment.

The flexible structure of our programme allows you to tailor the course to meet your needs and it enables you to adapt your pace of study to changing personal circumstances.

Our flexible study options will help you in a number of ways:

  • to remain in employment while you study
  • to finance your own study
  • to spread the costs over a longer period
  • to fit your studies around family and work commitments
  • to ease back in to learning if you have been out of education for a while

Assessments:

At the Institute we employ continuous assessment as an important tool to help measure progress, manage your workload and bring the right focus to your study. It also provides the framework for your feedback.

CLINICAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME

Clinical Placement is an important feature of our programmes as this is where students gain competence and confidence in managing a wide range of musculoskeletal problems, including sporting injuries. This is where you develop as a practitioner, applying the knowledge and skills learned in class.

The quality of supervision and the variety of clinical experience is unrivalled in Ireland. It ensures that on graduation you are work-ready and have the confidence to establish your own private practice. Emphasis is also placed on managing a case load, promotion and marketing – all valuable skills for building a satisfying and rewarding career.

Clinical placement is available in all three IPTAS campuses – Dublin, Limerick and Galway. Students complete one clinic block in Stage 1 (one evening per week for five weeks) and four clinic blocks in Stage 2.

CAREERS

Many prospective students, with a background in sport, personal training or a qualification in massage or rehabilitation are attracted to IPTAS programmes, having themselves experienced the benefits of treatment or because they see it as way of broadening their skills and the range of services they will be able to offer to potential clients.

As practitioners they have an opportunity to give something back and also an opportunity to stay involved. Institute graduates have worked with a wide cross-section of teams, Olympians and professional sports people.

Graduates of the Institute have also chosen to work in many other diverse areas including medical centres and primary care centres, health and fitness centres, chiropractic clinics and as consultants in musculoskeletal health with large companies. Some institute graduates teach in Further and Higher Education.
